There's just a lot of different kinds of orcs. They're orcs in service of Sauron (more on him in a minute).Īll orcs were created by Melkor, an evil Vala (we'll get to them, too), either by torturing Elves or by making them from scratch, depending on which of Tolkein's writings you prefer. So all of these things I'm stabbing are orcs? Tolkien's writing doesn't really have an answer about where they came from or how they got so short - maybe island dwarfism? - but they're officially related to Men. There was a war, a continent got destroyed and Men ended up spread all over the place.Īnother quick aside: Hobbits are technically Men. The whole "Why do we have to die and you don't?" thing made a lot of people unhappy. Elves and humans got along pretty well for a long time, but slowly, and with Sauron's influence (he'll come up again, too), things got tense. The big difference between Elves and Men was mortality - Elves are immortal, while Men die. Men were the second race created by Eru Iluvatar, Tolkien's big-C Creator (we'll get to Eru in a minute). He was a product of his time, and as uncomfortable as it is to use Men exclusively, we're going to be faithful to Tolkien from here on.) Monolith Productions/Warner Bros. (A quick side note: Humans are called “Men” in Tolkien's writing. Tark is the orcish word for, effectively, humans. What's a tark, and why do the orcs keep calling me that? But that's kind of on you, because it came out three years ago. Second, we're going to try to avoid spoiling anything about the second game, but we'll end up spoiling the ending of the first game. First, a blanket spoiler warning for, we guess, just all of Lord of the Rings. Let's start with something simple, and then we'll see where that takes us.īefore we get started: a note on spoilers. We're going to gloss over a lot, and we'll be a little irreverent about some of it, but we'll be accurate enough that you can understand Talion's place in the world and what's going on in Middle-earth: Shadow of War. But we're here to give you a crash course in Tolkien’s daunting lengendarium. So how do these games fit into Tolkien's world? There's no short answer to this question - Tolkien tended to be a little wordy, to say the least. Sure, they take some liberties with Tolkien's canon - adding to it in some places and … finessing it in others - but they're undeniably Middle-earth stories.īoth of the Middle-earth games take place in the 60 years between Bilbo shoplifting and Frodo destroying the evidence. They were pretty good, so long as you don't have strong opinions on whether or not balrogs had wings (don't me).īoth of the Middle-earth games take place in the 60 years between Bilbo shoplifting and Frodo destroying the evidence. Many years later, Bilbo's “nephew” (actually, his first and/or second cousin once removed) had to take a trip to throw away Bilbo's jewelry, because it turned out to be some pretty ill-conceived thievery on Bilbo's part. (No, seriously, go watch that music video. They made some live-action movies about it, along with a super-’70s animated movie, and Mr. Bilbo Baggins went on a surprise walk - an unexpected journey, if you will - with some friends and ended up finding some neat jewelry. “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”

There is really no reason for Bookends to exist. When we do, it will be at least partly as a result of the fact that they offer higher prices and much poorer customer service that Barnes and Noble. I asked if I could call ahead the day of the singing with a credit card to hold the book and my spot while I drove to NJ from CT. The individual explained that there was no option other than driving from CT to NJ to purchase the book and then returning to NJ on another day for the signing. I explained that I live in CT and this was not possible. The reply from the individual who answered the phone was "No." The individual went on to explain that I would have to come to the store in person, purchase and pick up the book, and then return on the day of the signing with the book and receipt to prove that I had purchased the book from Bookends. I then asked if I could purchase the book with a credit card by phone and then pick up the book and my admission to the signing at the actual signing in four days. I phoned the store today, 4 days prior to the signing and was told that there were still books available which would allow entry to the signing. Diving Horse by Nuart Postcard from Atlantic City, NJ. On 5 August 1978 French pioneer Bernard Danis mated a Soarmaster unit to this 168 square feet (15.6 m 2) SK 2SS wing and climbed to 1,825 metres (5,988 ft) above sea level at the Southern Alps. Unofficial FLPHG World Records - Confirmed but not validated by the FAI. La Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) is the international standard-setting and record-keeping body for aeronautics and astronautics, so it also oversees the official records by foot-launched powered hang gliders, currently under the RWF1 category. The latest generation of powered harnesses bear names such as Wasp, Flylight Doodle Bug, Raven, X1, Zenon, Airtime Explorer, Fillo, and Flyped. John Moodyīy 2008, there were a few harness designs similar to the Swedish Aerosport Mosquito, each sporting unique strengths, and produced by other FLPHG manufacturers. During 1967 Barry Palmer built what is likely the first weight-shift powered trike aircraft. It is now estimated that a modern flexible Rogallo wing hang glider requires at least 6 hp (4 kW) at the prop shaft and about 45 lbf (200 N) of thrust just to maintain level flight. However, the engine was quite underpowered and the craft could not achieve flight. It was powered by a 7 hp (5 kW) West Bend engine and mounted on top of a Rogallo-type flexible wing hang glider the propeller was 3 feet (1 m) in diameter and was made of balsa wood, covered with fiberglass and mounted in pusher configuration. In 1963 and during his free time, aeronautical engineer Barry Palmer built and experimented with a foot-launched powered hang glider at Bloomfield, Connecticut. Hang gliding record holder Don Mitchell fitted his Mitchell Wing B-10 with a motor, though the pilot still had to use their legs as undercarriage, an arrangement which persisted until he designed the B-10 Mitchell Wing. Differently, a rigid biplane designed also by teenager Taras Kiceniuk Jr., the Icarus II was a foundation for a modification in Larry Mauro's UFM Easy Riser biplane that started to sell in large numbers Larry Mauro would power his tail-less biplane one version was solar powered, called the Solar Riser. The Icarus V flying wing appeared with its tip rudders and swept-back style wing was used as a base for some powered experiments. Surprisingly, what really launched the powered ultralight aviation movement in the United States was not the Rogallo flexible wing but a whole series of rigid-wing motorized hang gliders. Inventors from Australia, France and England produced several successful microlight motor gliders in the early 1970s and very few were portable wings. These early experiments went largely unrecorded, even in log books, let alone the press, because the pioneers were uncomfortably aware that the addition of an engine made the craft liable to registration, airworthiness legislation, and the pilot liable to expensive licensing and probably, insurance. For a second time in aviation history, during the 1970s, motorization of simple gliders, especially those portable and foot-launched, became the goal of many inventors and gradually, small wing-mounted power packs were adapted. While powered microlights (ultralights) developed from hang gliding in the late 1970s, they were also a return to the type of low-speed aircraft that were common in the earlier years of aviation, but which were superseded as both civil and military aircraft pursued more speed. Explanation Around the same time that Ambriel debuted on the Global server, Yostar released a new mobile game for beta testing called Blue Archive. So this is what the world would look like if Ambriel paid her taxes. Thus spawned a meme about Ambriel committing a variety of tax-related crimes (similar to the memes about Yoshi), and Executor showing up to hound or punish her for them. However, the combination of her claim and her nervousness around Executor has led fans to take it as a Suspiciously Specific Denial. Ambriel committing tax evasion Explanation In one of her voice lines, Ambriel expresses a desire to avoid Executor, who wants to make sure she's "fulfilling her obligations", and claims that she doesn't need to worry because she pays all her taxes on time. In this case, stuffing a whole durian into an unlucky Reunion goon, while Warfarin, the other Expy, grins in the background. Explanation Since Aak is noted as an Expy of The Medic, the logical extension is of course, putting the Arknights Operator in the signature scenes of Meet the Medic. Anyway, that's how I lost my medical license.Later implementations of the meme usually have Aak literally weaponizing durians as bludgeoning weapons, and beating the shit out of his fellow operators with them. Due to its potentially lethal side effects (along with his S2's), players have joked about how it's probably the durian flavoring that's so deadly, since the real fruit is well-known for its very pungent and overwhelming natural odor. Aak's Durians Explanation This meme originated from the name of Aak's S3, Durian-Flavored Stimpack. The most recent example is Twilight of Wolumonde's TW-4, where the pre-placed Suzuran occupies a buff tile that would be great to have Ifrit sitting on, leading to players deploying Aak just to get rid of her. Explanation Due to his Team Killer potentials, Aak is also sometimes used by players to get rid of pre-placed operators in some event maps in order to replace them with more effective ones. Wait, this is an Ifrit tile? Always has been.Aak wants your sacrifices! Explanation Aak is infamous among the playerbase for his tendency to kill his teammates with his Cast From Hitpoints skills, with him nonchalantly shooting your operator like he did his enemies when he uses his skills didn't help the case. And so I just really realized that storytelling is a beautiful gift and an art, and I can’t sing, so you’ll never hear a song from me. And so that’s kind of why books and I’m like a girl who grew up on Taylor Swift, too. And I’m like, You know what? I want to write almost like the Survival Guide or something that helps younger woman, especially people in college, people in high school, even people recently post grad. You know, I just very much was like, Oh, I feel this in my heart is a desire and I feel like it’s for a good reason. And I, I think how naive I was really helped me and protected me that I didn’t look at the stats and think it couldn’t be me. I was like, God called me to writing a book like It’s going to happen. I started blogs and it did well and I honestly was so naive when I was young and I want to write a book. So I know I’m younger and my first book came out right after I graduated college and I got the publishing deal while I was in college. And it’s not just to make money at this point. The Telecaster keeps things relatively classic on the looks front, though the six bent steel saddles on the bridge are an addition that recalls recent American Standard modelsĪs the approaching flotilla of cardboard boxes darkened the horizon at The Guitar Magazine HQ, we dutifully rolled up our sleeves and set about reviewing all 94 permutations of the Player series. On top of all that there are a total of eight models available for lefties (Strat, Tele, J and P-Bass with either maple or pau ferro fingerboards) and the whole Player range is priced competitively with MSRPs between £549 and £789. The expected Strat, Tele, Precision and Jazz are accompanied by HSS, HSH, Plus Top, HSS Plus Top and Floyd Rose Stratocasters, a HH Telecaster, a Jaguar, Jazzmaster, Jaguar Bass and fretless and five-string Jazz Basses. With 21 different models in the Player series, and over 90 different variations when you throw finish options into the mix, there’s an awful lot to take in here. “One could look at it from arm’s length and think it looks the same… but literally everything is changed!” With that in mind, then, it’s time for us to take a closer look… “The main thing is that so many upgrades are subtle,” Norvell notes. With a two-point vibrato, a bridge tone control, a 9.5-inch ’board radius and headstock-end truss rod adjustment, this is very much a Strat for the pragmatic, modern player As well as ticking all the ‘first serious guitar’ boxes for musicians taking a step up from a beginner’s instrument, Norvell also believes that the Player series will be a hit with “pros looking for a backup axe, bassists looking to dabble with fretless or five-string, and modders that want a great base platform.” “The Player series is the entry price point to the Fender brand if you’re looking for a traditional Strat, Tele, P-Bass, Jazzmaster et cetera,” says Justin Norvell, Senior Vice President of Fender Products. Just ahead of Summer NAMM 2018, Fender has decided that the time is right to reimagine its entire Ensenada-made Standard line, last overhauled back in 2011. Although the funky Duo-Sonic and Mustang models in the Offset series that arrived back in 2016 represent a hip and very reasonably priced entry point into the catalogue, not everybody shopping for their first Fender wants a compact, short-scale instrument. |
